The Southern Waste Information Exchange (SWIX) which is based in Tallahassee, Florida, USA
was founded in 1980 by Dr. Roy Herndon as a result of research he was conducting at the
CBTR on pollution prevention.
The SWIX is a clearinghouse and repository for industry concerning information on recycled products,
solid and hazardous waste management, the availability of and demand for waste materials; and
waste management services and products. Mr. Gene Jones (right), the Managing Director of
SWIX, reports that these activities result in the recycling and reuse of approximately 100,000
tons of waste material with an estimated cost-savings, in reduced disposal costs of over $6,000,000
per year. Although the direct financial benefits to waste generators and users are substantial,
of even greater importance are the environmental benefits made possible by having this material
diverted from Florida landfills and solid waste incinerators, or from being mismanaged in ways
harmful to Florida’s fragile environment.
